Raees trained by Imtiaz A Sait with C S Jodha up wins The Suresh Mahindra Trophy 2018 at The Royal Western India Turf Club Pune
Imtiaz Sait trained Raees was brilliantly ridden by jockey C S Jodha to prevail in a tight finish in the 3200 metres Suresh Mahindra Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Saturday`s Pune races. Jodha was persevering on Raees who had to fight a determined battle with Vulcan and then stave off the late-rallying Frivolous to land the spoils. The victory was a special one for trainer Imtiaz Sait who got the distinction of becoming the first trainer in Western India to saddle 2000 winners in his long and productive career.
The race has an open look about it with three of the four horses in the fray in active betting. After Square Moon led the field till turning for home and then gave way for Vulcan, the battle for supremacy became intense with Raees joining the issue. The two fought a stiff battle before Vulcan weakened inside the final 100 metres. Raees shot ahead and then gamely held on as Frivolous finished with a rattle. Frivolous who lost some ground at the start, warmed up to the task very well but the winning post came too soon for the Yash Narredu ridden five-year-old. Incidentally, the ill-judged race that Jodha had ridden on Raees on the previous occasion had earned the jockey six-month suspension and the Pune Derby was under threat as the jockeys protested the suspension. The better-quality ride given this time out may not help Jodha's cause much in the appeal but the charge of not permitting the horse to run on merits may come up for consideration in the appeal board.
